This urban home, an infill project in an established neighborhood on Spokane’s South Hill, maximizes the utility of its small, sloping lot. The low-maintenance landscaping complements the contemporary architecture of the house while providing a showpiece in its own right. A limited planting palette keeps the landscape vibrant without becoming cluttered. As you approach the front door a segmented concrete walkway blends the transition between man-made and natural, while vertical grasses create a counterpoint to the horizontal lines of the house. The walk-out basement opens onto a backyard patio that takes advantage of the mature trees on and surrounding the lot with a variety of shade-loving plants. The patio connects to the deck above for ample entertaining space in the small yard.
